How are wallpapers installed?

Step 1: Prepare the Walls

  • Clean and Smooth: Start by removing old wallpaper, if necessary. Clean your walls thoroughly to remove any dust, dirt, or grease. Fill in any holes or cracks with spackle, and sand down any uneven areas to ensure the wall is smooth and even.
  • Prime the Walls: Apply a primer specifically designed for wallpaper. This helps the wallpaper adhere better and makes it easier to remove in the future.

Step 2: Measure and Cut the Wallpaper

  • Measure the Walls: Measure the height of your walls and add a few inches to each length for trimming. It’s important to allow for extra wallpaper at the top and bottom of each strip for precise alignment and trimming.
  • Cut the Wallpaper: Roll out the wallpaper and cut strips according to the measurements. If your wallpaper has a pattern, ensure each piece aligns with the next for a seamless look. Allow each strip to match the pattern before cutting the next.
  •

Step 3: Apply Adhesive

  • Choose the Right Adhesive: Select a wallpaper adhesive, either pre-mixed or a powder that you mix yourself. The choice depends on the type of wallpaper you are using (e.g., vinyl, fabric, paper).
  • Apply the Adhesive: Lay each strip of wallpaper face down on a clean, flat surface. Apply the adhesive evenly on the back of each strip using a brush or roller. Some wallpapers come pre-pasted, in which case, you just need to activate the glue by dipping the paper in water according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 4: Hang the Wallpaper

  • Start Hanging: Begin at the ceiling line, allowing a few inches to overlap onto the ceiling, which you will trim later. Make sure the first strip is perfectly vertical, as it will guide the placement of subsequent strips.
  • Smooth Out Bubbles: As you apply the wallpaper, use a wallpaper brush or a plastic smoother to gently press the paper against the wall, smoothing outwards from the center to remove any bubbles or wrinkles.
  • Trim the Edges: Use a sharp utility knife or wallpaper trimming tool to trim the excess wallpaper at the top and bottom of the wall. Ensure your blade is sharp to avoid tearing the paper.
  • Align and Repeat: Align the next strip of wallpaper, ensuring the patterns match and the seams meet precisely without overlapping. Continue around the room.
