How are Openwork Slats installed?

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

  • Clean the Surface: Ensure that the wall or surface where you will be installing the slat panels is clean, dry, and smooth. Remove any dust, debris, or loose material. If the wall is uneven, it may require some sanding or even a skim coat of plaster to smooth out any imperfections.
  • Prime the Wall: For better adhesion and a uniform finish, especially if you plan to paint the slats later, apply a coat of primer suitable for the wall and the type of slat material you are using.

Step 2: Measure and Plan the Layout

  • Measure the Area: Take precise measurements of the wall to determine how many slat panels you’ll need. It’s important to calculate the layout to ensure that the panels will fit proportionally and symmetrically on the wall.
  • Dry Layout: Lay the panels on the floor in front of the wall to visualize the final arrangement. Adjust the spacing and alignment as necessary to achieve your desired pattern, ensuring that the end slats don’t end up being too narrow.

Step 3: Install the Panels

  • Mark Guidelines: Using a level, draw horizontal guidelines on the wall to ensure the slats are straight and evenly spaced. This is particularly important to maintain visual consistency across the wall.
  • Apply Adhesive: Depending on the type of slat panels, either apply construction adhesive directly to the back of each slat or use a mounting system as prescribed by the manufacturer. Be sure to apply the adhesive evenly for strong and consistent adhesion.
  • Attach the Panels: Start from the bottom of the wall or another reference point that aligns with your design plan. Align the first slat panel with your guideline and press it firmly against the wall. Use a rubber mallet or a soft hammer to secure the panel without damaging it. Repeat this process, ensuring each panel is snugly fit against its neighbors and aligned with the guidelines.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

  • Trim as Needed: If any slat panels need trimming to fit around corners, outlets, or fixtures, carefully measure and cut the panels using a saw suited to the material of the slats.
  • Fill Gaps and Sand: If there are any gaps or the edges aren’t smooth, fill them with a suitable wood filler or caulk. Once dry, sand lightly to create a seamless appearance.
  • Finish the Surface: If desired, apply a finish such as paint, stain, or sealant to protect the panels and enhance their appearance. Make sure the finish is appropriate for the material of the slats and the overall design of the room.
