How are Stone Veneer panels installed?

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

  • Clean the Surface: Ensure that the surface where you will be applying the stone veneer is clean, dry, and free of any dust, dirt, or debris. If you’re applying the veneer outdoors, consider the weather conditions; avoid installation during rainy or very humid conditions.
  • Apply a Weather-Resistant Barrier (if outdoor or in wet areas): For outdoor applications or areas exposed to moisture, cover the area with a weather-resistant barrier. Overlap the sheets of the barrier by at least 6 inches and secure them with staples.
  • Install Metal Lath (for non-masonry surfaces): If the veneer is to be installed on non-masonry surfaces (like wood), cover the area with a metal lath. Overlap each piece by at least one inch and secure it with nails or staples every 6 inches.

Step 2: Install Stone Veneer Panels

  • Layout the Panels: Before applying mortar, lay out your stone veneer panels next to the installation area to plan the arrangement and fit. This “dry layout” helps you visualize the end result and make any necessary cuts beforehand.
  • Apply Mortar to Panels: Spread a 1/2 inch thick layer of mortar on the back of each panel using a trowel. Press the panel firmly against the scratch coat, wiggling it slightly to ensure a strong bond.
  • Align Panels: Make sure the panels are evenly aligned and the joints are tight. Use a level to check that the panels are straight and make adjustments as necessary.

Step 3: Grout and Clean Up

  • Fill the Joints (if applicable): If your stone veneer design includes grout joints, use a grout bag to fill these spaces with mortar. Be sure to match the color of the grout with your stone veneer for a seamless look.
  • Tool the Joints: Once the grout is thumbprint hard, use a jointing tool to smooth and shape the grout lines for a professional finish.
  • Clean the Panels: Wipe any excess mortar from the face of the panels with a damp sponge. Be careful not to pull mortar from the joints. Regularly rinse the sponge to keep it clean.
  • Curing: Allow the installation to cure according to the mortar manufacturer’s recommendations before exposing it to moisture.
